Diana Cote has been working
as a professional artist since receiving her BFA in 1982. After exploring
several media including traditional oil paint, her most recent interest
and passion lies with paintstiks, an oil paint that has been formulated
into sticks. This media has allowed her a most unique expression of any
material she has worked with so far. “Because paintstiks are so
similar to crayons, they have inspired me to scribble much like a child
does – unrestricted, uninhibited. My technique of layering these
‘scribbly lines’ weaves the color into a textural tapestry.
With this application, I have created my own stylized hybrid of Impressionism.”
In 1990, Gloria Russell an art critic critiqued Cote and agreed. She wrote
that Diana Cote is “a skilled adherent of impressionism –
style handling and content. Using oil stick as her medium, Cote builds
luscious garden scenes, interiors, and landscapes in a bright palette.
She concentrates on light effects, suggests atmosphere and breezes, just
like her 19th century antecedents. Particularly discerning in her observation
of sunlight she is inventive in her description, registering its rays
from uncommon angles…”
Cote’s work has been shown nationally for two decades
with a diverse following of both private collectors and commissions from
corporations throughout the Connecticut River Valley. In January of 2002
Cote was the WGBY/57 art auction featured artist. Besides area galleries,
her work has been exhibited in Chicago, Boston, Kansas City and Bermuda.
She was also featured in the television series, “By Their Own Hands,”
and more recently, an artist’s biographical television series “Eye
On Art.” Diana is on a quest in every work of art that she creates.
In capturing that special quality of light, which is what brings each
of her compositions to life, you may think that you can step right into
the image, or perhaps you already have. |
